Recession effects on movie industry

January 5, 2009

Recent data and past history seem to indicate that the movie industry may be recession proof.

  • From the beginning of September 2008, when the credit crunch hit, box office receipts are up 15% and admissions up 9% from the year prior (From NATO, the National Association of Theatre Owners)
  • Box office admissions have gone up in five of the last seven recessions (NATO)
  • However, a recent survey done by Forrester research suggested that those aged 25-34 were most likely to sacrifice a movie or premium cable if money gets tight (high speed internet was the primary media they could not live without)
